Zumiez: Specialty Retailer

Zumiez Inc. was founded by Tom Campion and Gary Haakenson in 1978. It was originally named “Above the Belt” when the first store opened at Northgate Mall in Seattle, Washington. Through the early 1980s the company grew rapidly with additions of stores at Everett Mall (Everett, Washington), Alderwood Mall (Lynnwood, Washington), Tacoma Mall (Tacoma, Washington) and Bellevue Square (Bellevue, Washington). The mid and late 1980s saw more stores open outside of the Puget Sound area and the corporate name was changed to Zumiez. In 2012 the corporate office was moved from Everett Washington, to Lynnwood, Washington.

The company does business as a multi-channel specialty retailer of action sports related apparel, footwear, accessories, and hardgoods. Zumiez stores focus on skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, motocross, and bicycle motocross for young men and women. It hardgoods include skateboards, snowboards, bindings, components, and other equipment.

As of November 29, 2014, Zumiez operated 604 stores, including 552 stores in the United States, 35 stores in Canada, and 17 stores in Europe under the Zumiez and Blue Tomato names. The company also has ecommerce websites namely, zumiez.com and blue-tomato.com.
