Cyberonics: Epilepsy Treatment
Cyberonics, Inc., (NASDAQ:CYBX) was founded in 1987 and based in Houston, Texas. It is a medical technology company with core expertise in neuromodulation. Cyberonics developed and markets the Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy system, which is FDA-approved for the treatment of refractory epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression. The VNS Therapy system utilizes a surgically implanted medical device that delivers pulsed electrical signals to the vagus nerve.
Together with its subsidiaries Cyberonics designs, develops, markets, and sells the implantable medical devices to hospitals and ambulatory centers. The firm is also engaged in investigating the use of VNS and other neuromodulation therapy for other indications, including chronic heart failure, and developing non-implantable device solutions for the management of epilepsy.
Cyberonics sells its products directly and also through independent distributors in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, parts of Central America and South America, the Middle East, China, Japan, and other parts of Asia.
With an epilepsy treating solution as its main business activity Cyberonics has carved a profitable niche for itself but like any company who wants to prosper and continue it has also looked at other medical solutions that can bring in possible revenues in the future.
