Calavo Growers, Inc. was founded in 1924 and is based in Santa Paula, California. The roots of the company can be traced to grower-hobbyists who grouped together to form the California Avocado Growers Exchange. It was actually two years later when Rudolf Hass of La Habra, California would plant the state’s first Hass avocado tree. The name “Calavo” was chosen through a national brand naming contest.
Today the company markets and distributes avocados, prepared avocados, and other perishable foods to food distributors, produce wholesalers, supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants worldwide. The company’s Fresh Products segment grades, sizes, packs, cools, and ripens avocados for delivery to the customers. It procures avocados grown in Chile and Mexico. It also procures other perishable commodities such as tomatoes, papayas, and pineapple.
The Calavo Foods segment procures and processes avocados into various guacamole products. It also distributes the processed products to customers and prepares a number of fresh salsa products.
The firm’s RFG segment produces, markets, and distributes fresh cut fruits, ready-to-eat vegetables, recipe-ready vegetables, and deli products.
Calavo Growers distributes its products under various brand names.
