Air Methods: Air Medical Transportation

Air Methods Medical Corporation was founded in 1980 and is based in Englewood, Colorado with the Centennial Airport considered its home port. The firm’s operation covers from Alaska to the Key West. Air Methods currently has more than 300 bases of operations that serve 48 states. It operates eight maintenance centers of excellent across the country and a national communications center.

Its fleet of 450 helicopters is mainly composed of American Eurocopter and Bell Helicopter products. While most of Air Methods’ aircrafts are helicopters they also operate several airplanes.

The firm along with its subsidiaries offers air medical emergency transport services and systems in the United States. Air Method does business in the Air Medical Services (AMS), Tourism, and United Rotorcraft (UR) segments.

The AMS segment provides air medical transportation services to the general population as an independent service, and to hospitals and other institutions under exclusive operation agreements. The firm’s services include medical care, aircraft operation and maintenance, 24-hour communication and dispatch, and medical billings and collections. This segment’s aircraft fleet comprised of around 264 company-owned aircraft and 136 leased aircraft as of December 31, 2013.

The Tourism segment offers aerial tours and charter flights, primarily focusing on Grand Canyon and Hawaiian Island tours. This segment sells its tours through Websites, as well as through various agencies, like online booking companies, hotels, resorts, and cruise operators. This segment operates 48 helicopters under two Part 135 Air Carrier Certificates.

The UR segment designs, manufactures, installs and certifies modular medical interiors, mult-mission interiors, and other aerospace and medical transport products for domestic and international customers. It also offers quality assurance and certification services.

In 1980, Mr. Roy Morgan bought a Bell 206 helicopter and became the Partner of Choice for a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. Air Method since then has continued to grow. Part of the company’s growth has been through acquisitions. In 1997, the firm purchased Mercy Air Services in San Bernardino, California and made more acquisitions through the years.
