Ambarella: Video And Imaging Solutions

October 27, 2014

Ambarella was founded in 2004 by Fermi Wang and Les D. Kohn and is based in Santa Clara, California. The firm is a leading developer of low-power, high-definition video compression and image processing solutions. Ambarella weds its processor design know-how with its capabilities in video and image processing, algorithms and software to provide a technology platform that is designed to be easily scalable across various applications and allow rapid and efficient product development.

The company’s system-on-a-chip, or SoC, designs fully integrate high-definition video processing, image sensor processing, audio processing and system functions onto a single chip, delivering exceptional video and image quality, differentiated functionality and low power consumption.

Ambarella’s technology is also popularly utilized in television broadcasting with a significant amount of TV programming worldwide being transmitted using the firm’s compression chips. Its Ambarella SoCs are well suited to drive the latest generation of high-definition security IP cameras. The firm markets its solutions to original design manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers through its direct sales force and logistics provider.

The company is led by co-founder Fermi Wang who is a seasoned leader, a serial entrepreneur, and a video compression technology expert. He holds several digital video-related patents, including one of MPEGLA’s core MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/AVC patents.

Before co-founding and leading Ambarella, Fermi was co-founder and CEO of Afara Websystems. This company pioneered server throughput computing. Sun Microsystems acquired Afara in July 2002. Afara’s multi-core, multi-thread CPU is the critical technology in Sun’s UltraSPARC roadmap. Prior to founding Afara, Fermi had senior engineering and business management positions at C-Cube Microsystems. His team was responsible for developing the world’s first MPEG CODEC chip.

Co-founder, CTO and director Les Khon is well regarded in Silicon Valley as one of the leading chip architects in the industry. Les combines his wealth of experience as a silicon architect with a talent for creating innovative solutions to complex problems. Before co-founding Ambarella, Les was CTO and co-founder at Afara.
