Smart & Finals: Warehouse Stores

April 24, 2014

In 1871, the Hellman-Haas Grocery Company was founded in Los Angeles, California. The firm later took the names of owners J.S. Smart and H.D. Final. Over 140 years later the firm is still based in Los Angeles but now operates almost 250 grocery and foodservice stores under the “Smart & Final”, “Smart & Final Extra!” and “Cash & Carry Smart Foodservice” banners in such states as California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and northern Mexico.

Smart & Final stores aim at both the foodservice and household markets. Its Cash & Carry Smart Foodservice are concentrated exclusively on service foodservice professionals. Foodservice clients are usually operators of small restaurants, catering companies, businesses, clubs and civic organizations. As for the household customers, Smart & Final stores offer a convenient, low-cost source for cooking and cleaning needs and are seen as the preferred destination for stocking-up their kitchens and preparing for holidays, parties and events. The non-membership warehouse stores stock in bulk sizes and quantities.

The chain was acquired by private equity Ares Management for about $975 million in late 2012.
