Ardent Health Services: Health Care Provider

April 21, 2014

In 1993 Ardent Health Services was founded as Behavioral Healthcare Corporation. This was an owner and operator of psychiatric hospitals. Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, the largest private equity investor in healthcare, in 2001, became majority owner. Appointed president and CEO was David T. Vandewater bringing with him over 30 years of experience in hospital management leadership and a new focus to the company.

Ardent started to purchase medical/surgical hospitals and health systems, including the facilities that now comprise Lovelace Health System in 2002 and 2003, and Hillcrest Health Care System in 2004.

The company repositioned itself in 2005 by selling its behavioral hospitals and focused its future on acute care hospitals and the health care services that support them.

Ardent operates about 13 acute care hospitals, a rehab hospital, a heart hospital, and number of specialty care facilities through health systems in the southern US with a total of around 2,200 beds.

The firm’s facilities are mainly located in New Mexico, where it operates the Lovelace Health System and in Oklahoma where it operates the Hillcrest Health Care System. It also has a hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Aside from this, Ardent Health Services’ operations include physician practices and about a dozen pharmacies.

Ardent Health Services is based in Nashville, Tennessee and also has a 110,000 member health plan. The firm has made capital improvement investments totaling $625 million over the last 10 years. It has 12,500 employees and employs 307 physicians.

Ardent is today a leading provider of health care in the communities it serves. After significant investments in people, technology and facilities, both systems in Ardent’s network have measurably improved clinical quality and market share, as well as patient, physical and employee satisfaction.

Keeping its focus on health care coupled with the willingness to invest a significant amount of money Ardent Health Services has placed itself in a win-win situation. It is able to provide quality service while also continuing to be a viable business proposition.
