Great Lakes Cheese: It’s All About Cheese

April 10, 2014

The company name says it all, Great Lakes Cheese. So it basically deals with cheese but on a national scale. It all started in 1958 when Hans Epprecht, a Swiss immigrant established a small business that delivered bulk cheeses to neighborhood stores in Cleveland, Ohio on the southern shore of Lake Erie.

Soon, his retailer customers started to request for wrapped, pre-cut cheese in smaller size and in more cheese varieties as to better satisfy their customers. This was a new window of opportunity for Hans and from there Great Lakes Cheese began its rapid growth. The firm expanded through organic growth as well as through acquisitions.

The company each year manufactures around 165 million pounds of cheese. Great Lakes distributes natural and processed cheeses and cheese spreads. This includes varieties like cheddar, Colby, Swiss, mozzarella and provolone. The firm also produces the premium Adams Reserve New York Cheddar and more.

Great Lakes currently serves the nation’s retailers and food service operations with eight strategic facilities across the U.S. Epprecht and Great Lakes employees own the firm.
