Young’s Market: Wine And Spirits Distributor

November 28, 2013

Young’s Market Company has a bit of an irony to its name nowadays. It was founded in 1888 and boasts of being one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the U.S. Therefore the company is anything but young.

The firm began in the retail grocery trade and was one of the country’s first chain markets. It owned and operated 60 neighborhood stores in Southern California in 1937 when it was at its peak. Young’s made a major change in 1940 when it stopped its retail enterprise and focused solely on the wholesale distribution of wine, spirits, meat, seafood and gourmet items.  In 1964 the company purchased two established wholesale distributors in Hawaii and began doing business there as “Better Brands”.

In the mid 1980s the firm bought two wine and spirit wholesale distributors in Northern California, Rathjen Wines and Spirits and Berberian Brothers, Inc., in the process becoming the first statewide wholesale distributor of alcoholic beverages in the state of California.

The year 1990 saw the Underwood family acquiring all of the shares of stock in the company that they did not already own.

Today Young’s Market is the fourth largest wine and spirits distributor in the U.S.  It does business in California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. The Underwood families still privately own the company.
