NBTY: Vertical Integration

In 1971, Arthur Rudolph founded Nature’s Bounty with a small number of associates in a single building in Plainview, New York. The following year the company entered the direct mailing business and in 1975 added a retail channel to its expanding portfolio of expertise in the nutritional supplement industry.

Over the years the company continued to expand organically and through acquisition. It when beyond American shores and had international operations. Today the firm is known as NBTY and is the largest vertically integrated source of nutritional supplements in the US. It manufactures, wholesales, and retails over 25,000 products such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, and sports drinks.

Among its brands are Nature’s Bounty, Ester-C, Sundown and Solgar. The firm has manufacturing facilities in the US, UK, Canada, and China and is capable of producing package capsules, tablets, liquids, and powders. NBTY sells its products through wholesalers, pharmacies, health food stores, and supermarkets all over the world.

In 2010, The Carlyle Group acquired the firm. The Carlyle Group is one of the leading private investment firms in the world. NBTY which has headquarters in Long Island now employees more than 14,000 associates worldwide.
