ServiceMaster: Housecleaning And More

July 29, 2013

There are many activities we can do ourselves and there are those that we need more expert help in doing. For example cleaning the house is something we can do, termite control may need more expertise than we possess. Yet even cleaning the house can become an impossible task if you don’t have enough time to do it or maybe the house is just too big to clean.  There may also be an instance when the degree of cleaning required is very high so one needs to hire people that can get the job done. You and your family may not just be up to the task.

It’s fortunate for everyone that there is a company called ServiceMaster that can handle anything from housecleaning to termite control. With demands for people’s time nowadays even much higher this kind of residential and commercial service is quite relevant. Amazingly even in the earlier years this form of service had already been in demand.

ServiceMaster began in 1929 in Chicago as a moth-proofing company founded by Marion E. Wade. A God-fearing man he held a high standard of regard for employees and customers. The enterprise was incorporated in 1947. It expanded its services to include carpet cleaning in 1952 and also establishing one of the United States’ first franchise businesses.

More expansion followed with the company taking its know-how to the health care industry in 1962 and became a pioneer in third-party outsourcing.  ServiceMaster entered the education market in 1980 and also expanded its services to include a broader range of commercial services.

Today the company is an industry giant serving millions of commercial and residential customers in the US and globally with housecleaning, termite and pest control and landscape and maintenance services. It well-known brands are Terminix, TruGreen, and Merry Maids. Its division, ServiceMaster Clean cleans carpets and flooring for residential and commercial customers.  AmeriSpec division inspects homes, American Home Shield provides home warranty plans, and Furniture Medic repairs and restores furniture.

July 2007 saw a group of equity investors led by Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, Inc. (CD&R) purchase ServiceMaster and made it a private company. Its company headquarters is now located in Memphis, Tennessee.
