Glazer’s : Beverage Is Their Business

June 10, 2013

While the method and form may have changed Glazer’s have been a company firmly rooted in the beverage business since its inception. It all began in 1909 when Louis Glazier moved to Dallas, Texas with his wife Bessie and founded the Jumbo Bottling Company. The enterprise produced a line of flavored soda waters that were sold from the back of horse drawn wagons.

This business grew as a family affair with three of the couple’s children later on joining the enterprise.  Max, Nolan and Fritz Glazer started out working part time as helpers in the family’s bottling business. Max and Nolan Glazer then formed Glazer’s Wholesale Drug Company, Inc. It seemed a strange name but it was only drug stores and drug wholesalers which could deal in alcohol during Prohibition. The company website states that the firm was founded on September 3, 1933 coinciding with the repeal of Prohibition.

From bottling the family undertaking was now clearly in the wholesale distributing business of alcoholic beverages. From sodas to alcohol and from production to distribution what was clear was beverage was the main product involved.

The alcoholic beverage wholesale distribution business was a perfect fit for the family as they were very successful in this endeavor. By the late 1930s Glazer’s was already acquiring distribution rights from a number of suppliers. In the 1940s the company entered Louisiana and Arkansas. Through organic growth and acquisitions Glazer’s continued with its steady expansion.

The late 1990s saw the company operating in nine states. Glazer’s made large acquisitions of MillerCoors distributorships in 2010 and 2011, and expanded its fine wine portfolio with the purchase of Prestige Wine Cellars.  The company is today the largest of its kind in Texas and one of the largest wine and spirits distributors in the US. It distributes Brown-Forman and Bacardi spirits, Diageo products, Budweiser beer and Robert Mondavi wines.

Glazer’s currently operates in 14 U.S. states and the Virgin Islands. The firm produces over $3.8 billion in annual revenue.  The Glazer family still owns the business and looks to be distributing beverage in a big way for a long long time.
