Save Mart Supermarket: Eat Or Be Eaten

Save Mart Supermarkets is a grocery business based in Modesto, California and operates its supermarkets and warehouse stores under the Save Mart Supermarkets, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, and FoodMaxx names.  The company also owns SMART Refrigerated Transports, a distributor.

Founded in 1952 by Mike Piccinini and Nick Tocco the current CEO and majority owner is Robert Piccinini who is the son of Mike and nephew of Nick.  Robert became the President in 1981 and purchased Save Mart Supermarkets in 1985 and became its CEO.

Aside from organic growth the company has gone into partnerships to enter new businesses. In the world of eat or be eaten, Save Mart has been doing a lot of eating. In 1988 it acquired 27 Fry’s Supermarkets in the San Francisco Bay area. It then purchased 10 Lucky stores in Central Valley in 1997.

In a move that doubled its size the company acquired 132 Albertsons stores in Northern California and Northern Nevada in 2006. It now operates over 240 stores in Central and Northern California and Northern Nevada.

The privately held company earned revenues of $4.8 billion in 2010 and has around 20,000 employees. In a world where one can get eaten the company chose to be aggressive and started acquiring competitors. It has to pay the prize of acquisition costs but so far has managed to prosper.
