Sheetz: Convenience Store In A Larger Size
Sheetz Inc. is a convenience store chain based in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Its stores sells fountain drinks, baked goods, groceries, made-to-order sandwiches and salad. It also has self-service car washes, and discount gas and cigarettes. What makes this chain distinct from others is its noticeably larger stores. Its stores on average are 4,200 sq. ft. which is nearly twice the size of the average 7-Eleven. New stores go even as large as 5,000 sq. ft. Sheetz has more than 430 combination convenience stores and gas stations which are mainly located in Pennsylvania. It operates in five other states namely Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Sheetz, Inc. was founded in 1952 by Bob Sheetz. He bought one of his father’s five dairy stores located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. In 1961, Bob’s brother Steve was hired to work part-time at the store. Expansion went slowly. Things changed in 1969 when Steve joined the company as general manager. The company eventually had 14 stores by 1972. The following year the firm added gasoline pumps and self-service gasoline.
The two brothers had opened100 stores by 1983. Bob retired in 1984 and Steve took over. Bob’s son Stan was appointed president in 1995 and Steve became the Chairman of the Board. Sheetz, Inc. now has over 14, 500 employees and is still owned by the Sheetz family.
