It Began In College
There’s no doubt that the origins of CH2M Hill had something do with college life. The company name CH2M is the first letters of the company founders. It was founded in 1946 by Oregon State University civil engineering professor Fred Merryfield and three of his students. The students were Holly Cornell, Jim Howland, and T. Burke Hayes. The H2 portion stands for Howland and Hayes.
As for Hill it came about due to a merger with Clair A. Hill and Associates of Redding, California in 1971. The merger did not result in the relocation of the company headquarters. It remained in Oregon until 1980 when it was decide to relocate to Colorado to have a more central location in the U.S.
Today the company is a global full-service provider of consulting, design, construction, and operations services for private companies, federal, state, and local governments. CH2M Hill got to be so large not only through organic growth but also through acquisitions. It has acquired around 12 other companies both local and abroad that have greatly increased its capacity to do a wide range of construction works.
CH2M Hill is capable of undertaking huge projects such as doing a joint venture to help replace the entire sanitary services infrastructure of Singapore. In 2011 the company had revenues of $5.56 billion. CH2M Hill is an employee-owned company that has its own internal stock market that does buy/sell activities on a quarterly basis.
