Currently At No. 2: Sun Products Corporation

June 14, 2012

Sun Products Corporation is a North American manufacturer and marketer of fabric care and household products.  In the fabric care market among its established brand products are Wisk®, Surf®, Sun® laundry detergents and fabric softener Snuggle®.  The company has the second largest share of the $10 billion dollar North American market.  With Procter & Gamble holding the number one spot, it may take awhile for it to become number one (and will require a good deal of resources).

The company generates substantial earnings of $2 billion dollars annually. Aside from fabric care Sun Products also manufactures auto and hand dish detergents.  The company markets its own brands. It also manufactures for other retail brands.

Sun Products recently opened its North American Technology Center in Trumbull, Connecticut. This is an indication of its thrust to improve on existing products as well as develop new ones. The facilities complement an existing Research and Development Center in Salt Lake City.  For any company to grow especially in the detergent sector research and development is important as it may get left behind by the competition. With Procter & Gamble as the dominant player Sun Products cannot afford to be complacent on research and development.

The company became the number two player in the fabric care market virtually overnight. This corporation is the product of the merging of what was Unilever’s North American laundry products lineup and Huish Detergents in 2008. This is a private company owned by Vestar Capital Partners.

Its creation already changed the landscape in the fabric care market; it’s interesting to see what the company will do next.
